Have you ever wondered how theatre began?
Theatre was a form of entertainment and began as a festival to celebrate the Greek god Dionysus (the god of grape-harvest and fertility). Theatre eventually became a HUGE part of Greek culture.
- Tragedies = Serious plays with a moral lesson. There was usually a hero who would eventually meet their downfall because of their pride.
- Comedies = Light-hearted plays. These plays told stories of everyday life and usually made fun of Greek celebrities and politics.
These theaters were designed as a half circle for the audience to sit and watch with the stage in the middle. This shape allowed the actors voices to carry throughout the space!
- Theatre comes from the Greek word theatron, which translates to the "seeing place"
- The first ever actor's name was Thespis. Today, actors are still referred to as thespians
